Spam Madness… No, this is not the title of a book, this is what happens every time I come to my book blog to post. I will soon not be in full time employment. It's an excerpt from De Brevitate Vitae (On the Shortness of Life) by Lucius Annaeus Seneca, and except for a few cultural discrepancies (having slaves for example) it could just as easily have been written today. And because of that, I have a bit more time on my hands, which I find means I spend more time looking around and just noticing things. Death is but just around the corner. Traditional Ash Wednesday liturgies focus on the shortness of life and remind us that we come from dust and will return back to the earth, dust once more. However, it was also a world of singing and dancing, of bawdy jokes and sex in all its forms, in fact a zest for life that reflected the very blunt shortness that life could take, through regular bouts of war, famine and disease. The days are fleeting ever so quickly for us all. Lucius Annaeus Seneca (5 BC – 65) was an ancient Roman stoic philosopher, statesman as well as a member of the literati. The average person wanders around 28.000 days on this beloved earth of ours before going to some place else. Fenton's photograph is a clear commentary on the genre, with the over-ripe fruit to the left representing the shortness of life, and the overturned, dark tankard suggesting indulgence and extravagance. We often lament that “life is too short”, and yet so many people do the exact same thing day in and day out, failing to realize that the shortness of life is highly subjective, not to mention entirely dependent on personal choice. I've just had some news which has made me thankful for everything I haveand realise it could all disappear in the blink of an eye.
